Campaign Diary
Hi. I'm April Harris and I'm the Office Manager here at Jim's campaign headquarters. From Penrose to Princeton Heights, we're out every day talking to people about life in St. Louis. This is a great city and it's getting better every day!

Vote
Months of forums, debates, neighborhood meetings, reaching out to voters, hosting fundraisers, spreading our message - it all comes down to this.
Tuesday, March 6 is Election Day. Polls are open from 6am to 7pm.
While the Shrewsbury Campaign has worked extremely hard to position ourselves for victory, no election can ever be taken for granted. Each and every vote is important and if you’ve ever worked on a political campaign or run for office yourself, you know what I mean.
I thank you for the support you’ve shown me in this campaign and throughout the years; and I’d just like to remind you to get out and vote Tuesday. We can’t win without you!

Countdown
A few weekend snow flurries couldn’t stop us, our volunteers or our supporters from walking the streets, dialing the phones and reminding voters about Tuesday’s election. Beth Murphy-13th Ward Committeewoman, Cecelia Grant-19th Ward Committeewoman, "Chink" Washington-21st Ward Committeeman and many others worked the neighborhoods from Get Out the Vote operations simultaneously at SEIU and Electrical Workers headquarters.
From North Park United Methodist Church to St. Ambrose on the Hill, Jim covered the city too - talking to voters and reminding everyone what this election is all about. With just two days until E-Day, we’re all still hard at work.

1929-2007
The state of Missouri and St. Louis lost a true political leader today. Tom Eagleton was the embodiment of Democratic beliefs and ideals and he is the reason I work in government today.
I was 12-years-old when I worked on my first political campaign. That was in 1968 and the campaign was Tom’s successful race for the U.S. Senate.
He was instrumental in creating our federal Clean Air and Water Acts and it was the Eagleton Amendment which helped to finally put an end to America’s involvement in the Vietnam War.
After three terms in the Senate, Tom returned to St. Louis where he continued to stay involved in many of the important issues that have shaped our city.
Tom was a mentor, an advisor and my lifelong friend. My condolences to Barbara and the Eagleton family.

4 Days to Go
Are you a G.I. Joe or Jane? Do you crave action and winning the battle?
If so, we’re looking for you!
We’re just 4 days from victory and this is the time to stay vigilant - to make sure all bases are covered. Every successful campaign is fueled by the volunteers who make it happen and we’ve been incredibly fortunate to have some of the brightest, most experienced and hardest working St. Louisans on our team.
In these final days, we are doubling our efforts to reach people with Jim’s message. We’re knocking on as many doors and ringing as many phones as we can to let people know about Tuesday’s election.
And of course the big day means greeting voters, making phone calls, helping the elderly and homebound get to the polls so they can participate in this election and making sure everything else runs smoothly. In short, we’ve got a place for you!

Fair & Balanced
Catching up on some reading today, we’ve come across a couple of articles that accurately and impartially (not always easy to come by in the local media) sum up this election and why Jim (in my humble opinion) is the right guy for the job.
From the West End Word:
He is currently sponsoring legislation, along with Alderman Fred Wessels, that would require new city buildings - be that a new office building or a parking structure - to conform to green building guidelines. He is also in talks with St. Louis Public Schools about a daytime curfew for school-aged children that would help the school district with its truancy problems and neighborhoods that have issues with crime and anti-social behavior.
In previous years he has sponsored bills that have put aside funds to help victims of domestic violence and tightened gun safety laws in the city. These bills may not seem to have much in common but Shrewsbury begs to differ.
“Those are not the kinds of bills that raise you a lot of campaign dollars but they do improve the quality of life,” he said. After years of decline, the city’s population is stabilizing and may even be increasing, and new housing developments are popping up across the city: “The city is making progress,” he said.
And from the Post-Dispatch:
After a teenager brandishing a BB gun was shot by police, Shrewsbury passed a law prohibiting the sale of realistic-looking toy guns to minors. He's also sponsored bills abolishing the city auto sticker and requiring all restaurant workers to be vaccinated for hepatitis A.
Even while steadily accumulating more political power over his long career, Shrewsbury can hardly be described as glamorous. He buys dark suits off the rack, and would sooner chat about the history of the Democratic Party than call a news conference.
"He is not prone to being ostentatious or flashy or showy," says a supporter, former State Senator Pat Dougherty. "He believes in professionalism."
I guess sometimes the press does get it right!

Election Day is one week from today. I think this is a good time to reflect on where we’ve been in this campaign and the thoughts that have been on voters’ minds.
First of all, I want to say thank you for the support you’ve shown through fundraising, volunteering, requesting yard signs, sending letters, making phone calls or simply offering a kind word of encouragement. Your friendship has meant a lot to me through the years and I look forward to working with you in the years ahead.
As I’ve said before, I’m seeing more interest than ever in the city of St. Louis and the steps we’re taking to rebuild and grow our neighborhoods. Since becoming aldermanic president, I’ve attended countless neighborhood meetings, parish picnics, parades, festivals, forums and debates. The concerns I’ve heard from you are the concerns I’ve carried back to City Hall.
Keeping repeat offenders out of our neighborhoods, attracting new cutting-edge industries to St. Louis, getting more kids back into the classroom. If you’ve heard me talking about it at City Hall that’s because I’ve heard you talking about it everywhere else.
Once again, please take a moment to check out the rest of our website and learn a little bit more about this election. And most importantly, be sure to show the rest of your community that you care about the future of St. Louis by voting one week from today - Tuesday, March 6th.
